Only 10% of the energy used by a conventional (incandescent)
light bulb generates lighting. Switching to a CFL
(compact fluorescent light bulb) is the smart energy choice – a
CFL uses 70% less electricity and lasts 4 to 10 times longer
than an incandescent bulb, and saves about $50 in electricity
costs in its lifetime, which essentially means it pays
for itself. CFLs also produce less heat, so they
are safer to operate.
If every American household replaced just one standard
light bulb with a CFL, it would be the equivalent of the
power one large nuclear plant generates each year – or
the reduction of 260 lbs of CO2 per year, per
